Illinois Alternate Assessment
The Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) measures the learning of students with significant
cognitive disabilities. The results give parents, teachers, and schools one measure of
student learning performance. Results are also used to measure school and district adequate
yearly progress (AYP) as required by the No Child Left Behind law.
Students in grades 3-8 are tested in reading and mathematics. Students in grades 4
and 7 are also tested in science. Students in grade 11 are tested in reading,
mathematics, science, and writing. It is a performance-based assessment that uses on
demand tasks, which are aligned to the Learning Standards.
For additional information on IAA, visit the
Illinois State Board of Education website.
